Family Promise of Washington County Building Community - Strengthening Lives

Volunteer Opportunities

Family Promise relies on the support of volunteers from the community assist staff to provide a safe caring, supportive shelter program for homeless families with children. There are a variety of ways individuals and organizations can help. Trained volunteers help staff the shelter, provide a supportive environment of care, help with donations, perform administrative tasks, help with laundry, interact with parents and engage children in activities each day. Volunteer opportunities at the Shelter House include week day and week end shifts.

Regular Volunteer Shifts

  • Monday - Friday, 7:00-9:00 am
Volunteers Open the Shelter and Greet Families as they return from the overnight host church.
  • Monday - Friday, 3:00-5:00 pm
Volunteers greet families and children as they return to the day house from school, work and activities before going to the host church.
  • Wednesday, 5:00-7:30 pm
Bring a partially prepared meal and eat with the families. Having dinner at the day house one night a week gives families extra time for midweek chores and laundry and also allows the hosting congregation space for weekly activities.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 3 shifts, 8:00-11:00 am, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, 2:00-5:00 pm
Volunteers can help keep the shelter house open for families during 3 shifts. Volunteers can have quiet time in the office, make coffee, greet families, assist with access to resources (personal care items like toiletry items) help with chores (like laundry), engage children in activities and games, and create a caring environment in absence of staff.
